Rock 'n' Roll and American Society
This is a course about the history of rock 'n' roll and how it interacted with the history of the United States and ultimately, the world. This is just about the most fun you can have in school, and it's available free to everyone in the world on Coursera, where it's called Music's Big Bang. This class goes to 1960. My University of Florida class goes to 1970.
Web design
Also known as "Communication on the Internet" and "Survey of Electronic Publishing," this is a constantly evolving course about online journalism. There are sections for undergraduates and for graduate students, MMC 3260 and MMC 5015 respectively. We study the skills that today's journalists must have when they enter the industry. That means blogging, site and page design, SEO, history and development of online services and a whole lot more. Students also learn XHTML and CSS.
This class, JOU 4946, gives students hands-on experience in creating interactive news stories on Web platforms. Students work in a professional newsroom with me and with other professors.
